Nineteenth-century Austrian portraiture mirrors perfectly an epoch of far-reaching social changes. It documents a growing consciousness of the individual, not only reflecting social status and personal expression, but also expanding its repertoire to include indications of the subjects’ real-life situations. The bourgeoisie increasingly discovered the merits of portraiture, constituting an important clientèle. Henceforth, it was not only the ruling élite who had themselves portrayed in a manner befitting their status. Thus the genre was, in a sense, democratised.
